Shape and proportion are key elements to consider in wardrobe planning. When we think of shape we tend to focus on silhouette, but the shape of the neckline deserves our attention as well. At a recent Sew Chicago meeting, we played dress up with four basic neckline shapes to see which were the most flattering for each of us.
One factor to consider when choosing a neckline is the shape of your face. As with all good design, the thing to strive for is balance. So, if your face is angular, you might want to counter-balance with round shapes in your neckline. A round face could be balanced with a v-neck. Oval is considered the ideal shape for a face and can wear any neckline.
Here are some examples of how six of the basic face shapes look in four different necklines – jewel, v-neck, square and boat neck.
